SAFETY AT MARKLAND WOODS
Safety is a top priority here at Markland Woods Condominiums. There are 157 families, more than 200 cars, and dozens of dogs and cats that call this home. That’s a lot of lives and property to protect! While there is no way to make the community as safe as, say, the gold vault at Fort Knox, there is a lot that we as residents can do to help ourselves stay safer.
EMERGENCY INSTRUCTIONS
If: Fire alarm sounds in your building
• Evacuate
• Alarm also notifies the So County Fire Department, no need to call 911
• To have alarm/sprinklers turned off firemen will find shut offs in the “dog house” (hut at the end of your building)
• Shutting off whole building water or stack water WILL NOT turn off water to sprinklers.
If: Water overflows ie: washer, water heater, toilet, sink, etc
• Water turnoff is found in bottom unit usually under guest bath sink. This will turn off just the water in bottom unit and units directly above. (Called stack.)
• Owner should call restoration service. If need help call Tom Gish at (425) 508-8066 and he will call to get service. Or contact him at tgish@portgardnermgmt.com
PREPARE FOR AN EMERGENCY
Fill in the Homeowner Information Sheet and send it to Tom Gish, Jr.
This sheet gives Tom information he needs when there is an emergency situation in your unit, including medical, plumbing, vehicle, or fire emergencies. The form lets you list your contact information at home and work so you can be reached; the contact information for tenants if you’re a landlord; your vehicle information; and the names and phone numbers of your emergency contacts. Having the information on file with property management can save your vehicle from being towed, and will make it easier and faster to contact you or your family in case of an emergency in your unit or on the property. Create an Emergency Information Sheet
Page 4 of the 2024 House Rules is a blank emergency information sheet you can fill in to use as a reference in an emergency. In an emergency, people may panic and forget basic information. Fill this in and keep it handy for caregivers, babysitters, children, and guests staying with you.
Included on the sheet is room to list:
Your address including unit number.
Where on the property your building is located.
Your phone number.
Your emergency contact and their relationship to you.
Information about pets in your house.
Also Included:
Non-emergency numbers for the Mountlake Terrace Police and the Fire Department.
Poison Control Center phone number.
Room for you to write down the location of the nearest fire extinguisher outside your unit, where the building water shutoff is located, where the breaker panel for your building is located (Hint: look near the doghouse where the sprinkler system is located), and where the nearest fire alarm pull station (red box) outside your unit is located.
FIRE SAFETY
In 2021 the Board invited the South County Fire Department to visit Markland Woods and provide advice on what unit owners can do to make their units safer for residents and first responders in case of an emergency. They also provided valuable information on how to store potentially hazardous materials. The Safety Letter is available at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wlBgEUlbMzvyAokc4QVQcT50CXJykX76/view?usp=drive_link and posted here for easy reference.
INGRESS AND EGRESS BLOCKAGES
Based on the above letter, in 2022 the Board created the following illustrated guidelines for unit ingress and egress (entry and exit) blockages that are dangerous in the event of an emergency.
